The International Workshop on Geography and Sustainability 2023 was held from October 26th to 29th 2023 at the China National Convention Center (CNCC), Bejing, China and via Zoom. The workshop theme was "Geography and Sustainable Development: Challenges and Opportunities". The workshop is one of the events of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (the United Nations General Assembly).
The workshop was organized by the International Geographical Union and co-organized by the Faculty of Geographical Science at Beijing Normal University and IGU-GFE, in collaboration with other IGU Commissions on Agricultural Geography and Land Engineering, Hazard and Risk, Land Use and Land Cover Change, Sustainability of Rural Systems, Land Degradation and Desertification, Young and Early Career Geographers Working Group on Geography and Sustainability, Modeling Geographical Systems.
The workshop attracted more than 900 attendants from 35 countries. The workshop had 12 keynote speeches, which focused on the key research areas of geography and sustainability. The topics of the 25 thematic sessions included carbon neutrality, climate change, dryland sustainability, big earth data, urbanization, ecosystem service, geography education, land degradation, land use change, agricultural geography, water resources, disaster risk reduction, and so on. During two days workshop, 342 oral presentations and 93 posters have been presented.
Prof. Bojie Fu and Prof. Michael Meadows co-chaired this workshop and delivered the welcome and closing remarks. Prof. Bojie Fu (Beijing Normal University; Research Centre for Eco- Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), Prof. Michael Meadows (University of Cape Town, South Africa; Nanjing University, China), Prof. Jianguo Liu (Michigan State University, USA), Chansheng He (Western Michigan University, USA), Holly Barcus (Macalester College, USA), Zhijun Yi (Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), Yaping Wang (University of Glasgow, UK), Peijun Shi (Beijing Normal University, China), Charles Karangwa (IUCN Nature based Solutions (NbS) Management Hub), Yonglong Lu (Xiamen University, China), David Eldridge (University of New South Wales, Australia), and Yansui Liu (Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences) gave the keynote speeches on "Social-Ecological Systems and Sustainability", "Changing Coastal Environments of China in the Anthropocene", "Sustainability Geography: An Emerging Interdisciplinary Frontier", "Watershed Science: Coupling Hydrological Science and Decision Making for Sustainable Water Resources Management", "Considering the Role of Community Engagement in Rural Sustainability Narratives", "IYBSSD: Highlighting the Value of Basic Sciences and Launching the International Decade of Sciences", "Urbanising Asia and Africa: Challenges and Opportunities for Geographers", "Addressing Planetary Crisis and Accelerating Sustainable Development through Nature-based Solutions", "Probabilities for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals and Future Scenarios for China", "Fertile Islands as Hotspots of Biogeochemical Activity in Global Drylands", and "Research on Human-Earth System Detection Based on Multisource Data", respectively. At the closing ceremony, the list of best presentation award and best poster award were announced, with 45 recipients. The recipients of the best editors, the best reviewers and top cited articles award were also announced.
